When I think of healthcare today, I really focus on the word ‘care’ and what that truly means to the human species. As a medical professional of 20 years, I feel stuck and sometimes lost in the mainstream mess of it all. The healthcare systems that we all rely on can feel so rushed and frenzied and sometimes I walk away as a patient myself not feeling like I was truly seen, heard or fixed. I also feel this personally as a medical professional sometimes; not always having the time, resources or energy to truly see, hear or fix the patients. It feels like dumping a load of artificial fertilizer on a struggling seedling, instead of just nurturing it with what it needs: sunshine, water, nutrients and touch. Getting to the core of it instead of just looking at it from the outside with a temporary fix. This is how I view clinical massage therapy. The body is this amazing, beautiful living thing that sometimes starts to fail, fall apart or hurt. I believe that massage therapy can target so many body systems and relieve so many ailments simply with therapeutic touch, tissue manipulation and shared healing energy. This is truly ‘caring’ for ourselves, and I would love to be able to offer this as an adjunct therapy to my nursing practice, all while broadening my knowledge and understanding of our wonderfully complex beings.
