Biography of Dr. Henry Ong ND, MD (International - Philippines) My journey to Naturopathic practice was indirect. I had studied to become an anesthesiologist in the Philippines, and then spent years as a Rural Family Physician in Australia. When I immigrated to Canada in 2010, the requirements to continue as a MD were quite cumbersome, and so I took my first job as an Associate to a family doctor (MD) in Toronto who practiced Integrative Medicine. His approach to health care combined the benefits of Conventional medicine and Naturopathic medicine. I need to admit that I was skeptical at first because I was trained in allopathic medicine, giving anesthesia to surgical cases in the Philippines and working as a family doctor in Australia. However, I saw the dramatic transformation of his patients after having more naturopathic treatments many times over the 5 years I worked for the clinic. I witnessed these patients become healthier, happier, and feel more optimistic about the future of their health. One patient in particular stands out who was a retired Canadian family doctor. They suggested to me during their treatment that I might consider training as a Naturopathic Doctor at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. I feel very fortunate that I followed through on her suggestion and undertook the study of Naturopathic Medicine. Today, I see my patients taking control of their health, and their life. They become more active, experience less pain from different sources, seem to have less emotional burden, less anxiety, less abdominal discomfort, and their chronic disease is more controllable. Presently, my goal is to harness my extensive experience in conventional medicine and at the same time combine them with the knowledge and skill that I gain studying and practicing as a Naturopathic Doctor so as to help more people to achieve their optimal health and live their life to the fullest. To update my knowledge, I always read articles from Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors, The Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges, Medscape, Pubmed, and recent scientific studies. Also, I attend conferences regularly with my peers, so that I can continue to learn.
