As a local, born and raised on the Saanich peninsula, Stefan is delighted to be working in his community with Tall Tree Integrated Health. Growing up, Stefan took part in a variety of activities, including Karate, baseball, hockey and weightlifting – but unlike many of his colleagues, it was not personal injury that led him onto the path of physiotherapy. Many influences of Stefan’s upbringing, including time living in a developing country during his formative years, ingrained in him a strong desire to help people, whatever career he chose. As he became more fascinated by human movement and physiology, these two passions came together in a pursuit to become a Physiotherapist. The fist step in Stefan’s journey was completing his Bachelors Degree in Athletic and Exercise Therapy at Camosun College, where he graduated top of his class, and as valedictorian. During the program, his field placements working with high-level hockey, soccer and rugby teams gave him the opportunity to witness and treat a variety of sports-related injuries, as well as develop injury prevention techniques. He also gained experience treating in clinical settings, helping individuals recover from musculoskeletal injuries through exercise prescription and manual therapy. During this time Stefan also worked as a fitness class instructor and personal trainer, helping people achieve their fitness and rehabilitation goals. Next, Stefan attended the University of Albert and completed his Masters of Science in Physical Therapy. This program offered him the opportunity to work with a multitude of patients including those recovering from joint replacement surgeries, heart and lung transplants, strokes, and ACL injuries. With the combination of his Athletic Therapy and Physiotherapy experience, Stefan has a wide range of skills and is able to work with a diverse demographic. Stefan is looking forward to continuing his educational journey and professional development, and will be pursuing his Manual Physical Therapy DPT Certification through EIM in the near future. What Stefan loves most about physiotherapy is having the ability to help people help themselves get back to the things they love to do – from playing hockey to playing with their grandkids. Stefan believes that the key to success is curating a comfortable environment for the patient to thrive and actively participate in their own recovery. His calm and patient demeanour allows patients to relax and feel heard. Stefan focuses on an evidence-based approach, which includes patient education, collaborative goal setting, exercise and manual therapy, to help his clients feel empowered and facilitate their road to recovery. When Stefan isn’t working, he loves spending quality time with his wife and animals, playing sports such as hockey, golf and squash, and exploring the beauty of Vancouver Island.
